Memory refers to the ability to retain information and reproduce it over a period of time when required to perform a cognitive task. It has been conceptualized as a process comprised of three stages, i.e., encoding, storage, and retrieval. All of us desire to possess an excellent memory system that is robust and dependable. There are a number of strategies for improving memory called mnemonics. The word 'mnemonic' is a system such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations that assists in remembering something. There are basically two broad categories of mnemonics; one category of mnemonics uses images, while the other uses principles of organization to memorize information.Important Points Mnemonics Using Images: There are many strategies that use images to improve efficiency in retaining and retrieval of information. Following two types of mnemonics use images:Method of Loci: Placing images at the location. This method uses the location of a familiar place as a cue to retrieve information. The keyword method is considered appropriate for learning vocabulary and foreign languages. In this method, any two pieces of information are linked using images.Mnemonics Using Organisation: It improves the ability to learn and retrieve information accurately by applying the principle of reorganization of the material to be learned.Chunking: This mnemonic technique illustrates systematic ways of encoding information. If you want to remember a long list of digits, you can break the numbers into chunks which can be associated with some important things for a lasting memory.First Letter Technique: In this technique, the first letter of each word, you want to memorize, is taken to make a meaningful word or sentence. For example, the color of the rainbow can be remembered using this technique. Violet Indigo Blue Green Yellow Orange Red. The word VIBGYOR stands for all the seven colors of the rainbow. Thus, it is concluded that the Mnemonic device is a technique that helps in remembering.
