Dindigul
B.

Solution:

The correct answer is Theni. A proposal to desilt the Vaigai dam at a cost of Rs 9 crore has been sent according to a Public Works Department official of the TN government. The Vaigai Dam is built across the Vaigai River near Andipatti, in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu. In March 2021, claiming that the Vaigai dam may have a silt deposit of up to 20 feet, reducing the original storage capacity by at least 15 %, an advocate moved the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court. Tamil Nadu government had decided to desilt the Vaigai dam following an official assessment that silt had accumulated to a height of 21ft, reducing water storage capacity. Officials from PWD asked the WAPCOS Ltd, which is under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, to submit a proposal to desilt the Vaigai dam. The alluvial soil will be dug out and will be sold at a cost of Rs 245 crore within three years. The final proposal has been made and sent to the Research Centre Chief Engineer for ratification. Additional InformationVaigai Dam was inaugurated on 21 January 1959 by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. This dam is the lifeline of farmers of the five districts namely Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram. It is one of the few dams which is not constructed in between two mountains so this dam completely depends on its own concrete strength. Vaigai Hydroelectric Power Plant was designed with a capacity of 6 MW. It has 2 units of 3 MW each. It was operated by Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO). Vaigai Dam measures 111 ft in height and can store water up to 71 ft, total storage capacity measures 174,000,000 m3.
