Grammar translation is a traditional method through which language is taught with a detailed study of grammar. Thus, learners apply the rule of grammar in translating sentences from their mother tongue to the target language. This method/strategy was first introduced in Germany and it was widely used in Europe for teaching English. It is also known as the Translation, Classical and Traditional method in English language teaching. It is used widely in Indian schools. In this method, the unit of teaching is the word and the teacher translates each and every word, phrase, and sentence of English into the mother tongue of the students.This method is one of the reasons of following standards of English in India. The steps are from formal to functional and the phraseology can be best assimilated into the interpretation.It explains grammatical rules therefore it gives correct knowledge of English. This method can be used in every situation. This method tries to establish a strong link between new ideas and old ideas.?Hence, it is concluded that the Grammar translation method is known as the Classical Method.
