Neither the child nor his/her family has much to say about the words that must be learned - those are given by the immediate environment and the culture. The vocabulary of a second language can thus be decided by the teacher, the textbook, or the school. The development of vocabulary is very important for the students.For developing vocabulary, students should guess or predict the meaning of words in the context of the lesson.It is a strategy in which the readers use prior knowledge of the subject and the ideas in the text as clues to the meaning of unknown words.The ability to guess what will come next in a reading text is central to the process of reading. It helps the reader to monitor his/her comprehension of the text. It also helps the reader to process minimum textual input to arrive at the meaning of the text. Hint Memorizing synonyms and antonyms is not the correct way to enhance vocabulary as it is based on rote memorization.Consulting the dictionary for every new word, will not lead to the development of vocabulary as they learn new words only for a short time.Making sentences of all the new words is also not appropriate for vocabulary development as they will learn vocabulary only for a short period of time.Thus, from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that guessing the meaning of new words in a given context might be the best strategy for developing vocabulary among the students.
